American actor Austin Robert Butler was born on August 17, 1991. For his role as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the biopic Elvis, set to be released in 2022, he has become widely recognized.
Butler got his start on television, appearing in shows like The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. He later moved on to teen dramas like Life Unexpected (2010-2011) and Switched at Birth (2012-present) on The CW (2011–2012). His breakout roles in The Carrie Diaries (2013–2014) and The Shannara Chronicles (2005–present) brought him widespread acclaim (2016–2017).
He portrayed Tex Watson in the Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and made his Broadway debut in the 2018 production of The Iceman Cometh (2019).
James Garrett: ‘Zoey 101’
Butler played James, the new love interest for Zoey on the popular Nickelodeon series in its penultimate season (Jamie Lynn Spears).
James may have been a fill-in for fan-favorite Chase (Sean Flynn), but he immediately became a main character in the show thanks to his charming chemistry with Zoey and swift integration into the ensemble. Many people first saw Butler in his portrayal as James, and it remains one of his most iconic performances.
Peyton Leverett: ‘Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure
Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure was a High School Musical spinoff film in which Butler co-starred with Ashley Tisdale as Peyton, a friend, and a potential love interest of Sharpay’s.
Peyton, a film school student, plays a pivotal role in the film, guiding and encouraging Sharpay as she makes her way through the hectic environment of New York City. Butler’s performance is a wonderful highlight of the picture with the charm he gives alongside Tisdale and the genuine feeling of care he brings to inspiring Sharpay to achieve her ambitions.
Jack: ‘The Dead Don’t Die
Butler played a teenage traveler in Jim Jarmusch’s 2019 zombie horror/comedy The Dead Don’t Die, although in a supporting capacity.
Butler was one of three young adventurers—the others being Selena Gomez and Luka Sabbat—who ventured into the town of Centerville when it became plagued with zombies in the middle of the night. Jack, played by Butler, doesn’t make it through the night, but he leaves quite the impression with his witty performance.

Hunter Calloway: ‘Yoga Hosers’
Butler also had a noteworthy supporting role in Kevin Smith’s horror comedy Yoga Hosers, in which he played a romantic interest with a dark side.
Butler, as “beautiful guy” Hunter Calloway, exudes just the proper amount of charm as the seemingly straightforward love interest of Harley Quinn Smith’s (partial heroine) Colleen M., but then he takes a delightfully bizarre turn by wishing to sacrifice Colleen. Though Yoga Hosers isn’t one of Smith’s most cherished works, it was a major turning point in Butler’s career and he met a truly bizarre end.
Jordan Gallagher: ‘Ruby & the Rockits’
Butler had one of his larger TV appearances as Jordan Gallagher on ABC Family’s family sitcom Ruby & the Rockits in 2009, despite the show’s disappointing ratings.
Butler played Jordan, the protagonist’s squabbling cousin in the series, who was played by Alexa Vega. Butler’s charisma and the chemistry he shared with Ruby made him stand out on an ensemble cast that also included Vega and David Cassidy.
Jake Crandall: ‘iCarly’
Butler also played the notable part of Jake on one episode of iCarly, despite not having the voice for the fictitious web series.
Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) and Sam (Jennette McCurdy) have a mutual obsession with the school’s hottest guy, Jake, and invite him to sing in their program, only to discover that he has no singing talent. Butler can obviously sing based on his performance in Elvis, but him pretending to be horribly made for a pretty humorous episode in the early seasons of iCarly.

Jake Pearson: ‘Aliens in the Attic’
Butler’s debut in the film industry came in the form of a co-starring role in the 2009 family comedy Aliens in the Attic, in which he played a member of a family fighting off some small but fearsome aliens.
Aliens in the Attic is a fairly normal family comedy with plenty of silly chuckles, but Butler and the rest of the actors really buy into the film’s crazy antics, which makes it a lot of fun to watch.
Sebastian Kydd: ‘The Carrie Diaries
Butler played Sebastian, the on-again, the off-again love interest of adolescent Carry Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) on The Carrie Diaries, the CW prequel to HBO’s Sex and the City.
Through Sebastian’s mischievous antics, Butler was able to display a more edgy side of himself, and the relationship between Sebastian and Carrie was a rollercoaster throughout the show’s two seasons.

Wil Ohmsford: ‘The Shannara Chronicles
Arguably Butler’s most prominent breakout role occurred when he starred in the short-lived MTV fantasy drama series The Shannara Chronicles as protagonist character Wil Ohmsford.
Butler proved himself a capable leader in the role of Wil, a half-human, a half-elf who is destined to defend the world from emerging dark powers, with his charismatic performance. Most likely, Butler’s breakout as Wil is responsible for his increased fame and devoted fan following.
Tex Watson – ‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’
Before his appearance as Elvis, Butler was most known for his work in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, in which he played a key Manson follower named Tex Watson.
Audiences will recall his final showdown with a drugged-up Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), in which Booth had trouble pronouncing his opponent’s name. In the end, Tex was killed horribly when Cliff ordered his dog to bite him everywhere except the groin.
