Gary Glitter Early Life
Paul Francis Gadd, better known as Gary Glitter, was born a single mother in Banbury, England, on May 8, 1944. He was given to the childcare system with his brother because he was a known troublemaker as a child. Gadd frequently fled to London, where he frequented nightclubs.

His Career Beginnings
Gadd started his career as a performer in London clubs as a teenager. He performed early rock standards and ballads at places like the Two I’s and the Laconda. Robert Hartford-Davis, a movie producer, noticed Gadd and arranged for him to have a recording session with Decca Records.
This was Gadd’s big break. In January 1960, he issued his debut single, “Alone in the Night,” under the pseudonym Paul Raven.
Gadd collaborated with record producer George Martin after signing with Parlophone Records in 1961. Gadd’s career as Paul Raven, however, hit a rough patch when he started recording, and by 1964, he was working as an assistant while appearing in television commercials.
After some time, he ran into music producer Mike Leander, who assisted Gadd in staging a comeback. He joined the Mike Leander Show Band under the name Paul Raven and later co-founded Boston International with saxophonist John Rossall. Boston International made several tours through the UK and West Germany in the second half of the 1960s.

His Success
Gadd adopted the stage name Gary Glitter as a result of the glam rock movement’s rising popularity in the early 1970s. He later put out a self-titled debut album, from which came his first big hit, “Rock and Roll.”
The song reached the UK charts’ number two spot and the US Billboard Hot 100’s number seven spot. I’m the Leader of the Gang (I Am), “I Love You Love Me Love,” “Doing Alright with the Boys,” and “I Didn’t Know I Loved You (Till I Saw You Rock and Roll)” are just a few of the hit songs that Glitter released in the years that followed this overwhelming success.
