Early Life and Education
Kyrsten Sinema, the middle child of Dan and Marilyn, was born on July 12, 1976, in Tucson, Arizona. She is of Dutch descent. Her parents split while she was young, and her mother remarried. Sinema relocated to DeFuniak Springs, Florida, with her newly rebuilt family. There, her stepfather lost his job, resulting in the foreclosure of the family house.
As a result, they spent three years living in an abandoned gas station. Sinema received her schooling at Walton High School, where she graduated as valedictorian at the age of 16. She went on to Brigham Young University, where she received her BA in 1995. Sinema went on to earn her Master of Social Work from Arizona State University in 1999, followed by her JD from ASU’s College of Law in 2004. She eventually returned to ASU to finish her Ph.D. in justice studies.

The Beginnings of a Career
Sinema initially entered politics in 2000, when she worked for Ralph Nader’s presidential campaign. She ran as an independent for municipal offices for the next two years, losing both times.
Sinema worked as an adjunct professor at ASU in 2003, teaching policy and grant-writing courses. She also taught corporate law as an adjunct at Arizona Summit Law School. Sinema began working as a criminal defense attorney after receiving her JD.
Arizona State Legislature
Sinema ran as an independent for the Arizona House of Representatives in 2002, finishing last in a five-candidate race. Two years later, she joined the Democratic Party and was elected to represent Arizona’s 15th congressional district.
Sinema was re-elected three times, with her third term ending in 2011. During this time, she also served as an assistant Minority Leader for the Arizona House of Representatives Democratic Caucus. Sinema was elected to the Arizona Senate in 2010, defeating Republican Bob Thomas. She served a single term.
