Astronaut, engineer, and test pilot Buzz Aldrin is an American hero. As the pilot of Gemini 12 in 1966, he performed three spacewalks. In 1969, he and Neil Armstrong made history by becoming the first humans to set foot on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission, for which he piloted the Lunar Module Eagle.
The third-ranked mechanical engineering alumnus of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1951, Aldrin was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He joined the Air Force after getting his commission and flew jet fighters in the Korean War. He completed sixty-six combat sorties in the air and downed two MiG-15s.

Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. was born on May 5, 1930, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Edwin Sr., a Standard Oil executive and veteran of the U.S. Army Air Service in World War I, and Marion were his parents. Madeleine and Fay Ann, his older sisters, were his first parents.
A former Montclair High School football player, Aldrin was also a Boy Scout. Aldrin’s father strongly desired for him to join the United States Naval Academy, so he enrolled him at the local Severn School. However, he had severe motion sickness and ultimately decided to enroll at West Point instead. With a BA in mechanical engineering under his belt, Aldrin placed third in his graduating class in 1951.

Aldrin wed Joan Archer for the first time in 1954; the couple had three children together—Janice, James, and Andrew—and were divorced in 1974. Then, from 1975 until 1978, Aldrin was wed to Beverly Van Zile. In 1988, he married Lois Driggs Cannon, his third wife; they divorced in 2012.
Throughout his life, Aldrin has spent the majority of his time in the Los Angeles and Orange County regions, including Beverly Hills, Westwood, Emerald Bay, and Laguna Beach. He has also resided in Florida’s Satellite Beach.

Honors
Aldrin received the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal in 1969 for his work on Apollo 11 among many other awards. For his work on the Gemini and Apollo missions, he was also awarded the Legion of Merit. He also got the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the Collier Trophy, the latter of which was given to the whole Apollo 11 crew.
He was one of 10 Gemini astronauts that were honored in 1982 by the International Space Hall of Fame. He was subsequently honored by being admitted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, the National Aviation Hall of Fame, and the US Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Additional honors have included the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award from the Space Foundation, the Langley Gold Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, the Harmon Trophy, and a variety of honorary degrees from colleges and institutions.
Actual Estate
A condo in LA’s Westwood district cost $1.34 million to buy in 1998 for Buzz and his then-wife Lois. Buzz offered this condo for sale for $3.3 million not long after their divorce. The apartment went for $2.857 million in June 2014.
