Paltrow, 50, started the conversation by saying, “You’ve been married two times?” to which her visitor replied, “Three times.” I had forgotten that you were wed to Ryan Reynolds, so that’s good. Goals,” Paltrow remarked.

“Yes,” Johansson chuckled. “We weren’t married for very long, but we were when I first met you, for Iron Man  or whatever.” Paltrow said, “We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house,” to which Johansson laughed and said, “He’s a good guy.”

Colin Jost, a writer for Saturday Night Live, and Johansson are now wed. The couple wed in a private ceremony in October 2020, and their son Cosmo was born in August 2021. How has your attitude about marriage or long-term partnerships changed? Paltrow questioned Johansson about the lessons she’s learned from her prior relationships. What have you discovered?

It’s funny, Johansson said. “I only really knew Colin for a long time via work. And when we first started dating, I wasn’t sure I was ready for a relationship like the one I have with Colin because I wasn’t confident in establishing my own limits and I didn’t know what I needed or wanted from someone else.

Johansson, who described her spouse of two years as “compassionate,” continued by claiming that she experienced a transformation in her life after realizing the “fundamental characteristics” she desired in a partner.

She went on to say, “I think one of the things that I realized is that there are certain fundamental things in your own personality that you need — me, anyway, [that] I needed to share with the other person.”

The Marriage Story actress stated, “Obviously being in a relationship is difficult whatever because you always have to make compromises and sometimes your lives split and then come back together. ‘Oh, it’s so essential for me, I need to be with a caring person,’ I never realized. That is a basic quality that has to exist.

For longevity, at least, Johansson opined, “understanding what those fundamental things are that you need in a partner is a must.” “I think recognizing those things changed the game for me,” the author said.

“That’s why it worked with Colin and me at that time — [because] I was finally able to step back and actually respect myself enough to know what those [fundamental] things were and be okay with it, you know?” she continued of her union to comedian Jost, 40. That was a lesson for life.
