Early Life and Career
Jamie Raskin was born in Washington, D.C., in 1962. He graduated from Georgetown University and Harvard Law School. After law school, Raskin worked as a lawyer and then as a professor at American University.
Raskin was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2006. He served in the House of Delegates for eight years, during which time he was a leading advocate for progressive causes. In 2014, Raskin was elected to the United States House of Representatives.
Illness
In December 2022, Raskin announced that he had been diagnosed with diffuse large B cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He began chemotherapy treatment in January 2023. This came as a shock to his supporters.
To explain in a few words, diffuse large B cell lymphoma is a cancer of the white blood cells. It is the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, accounting for about 40% of cases. The disease is typically treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Raskin learned that he was in remission with a 90% chance of not experiencing a relapse in late April from his medical team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and the neighboring Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
