Georgia football player Devin Willock passed away in a fatal car crash on 15th January 2023 at the age of 20.
A member of Georgia’s recruiting staff, Chandler LeCroy was also with him as well as two other staff members. LeCroy who was 24 years old also died in the crash, but the other two were hospitalized in stable condition.
Who was Devin Willock?
Born in the Bronx in 2002, Devin Willock was a 20-year-old, 6-foot-7, 335-pound offensive lineman. He was a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey.
He was a member of the New Milford High School football team for two years before transferring to Paramus Catholic as a junior.
He played in all 15 games for Georgia this season, including the national championship game, and had made two starts.
He was probably the single nicest kid I’ve ever coached,” said John Whitehead, Willock’s high school coach at Paramus Catholic.
“He never wavered,” Whitehead said. “He never complained. He never acted like he was the best player on the team or the smartest in the room. You don’t get a lot of kids like him. Don’t think about the way he died, think about the way he lived.”
Devin Willock’s Cause of Death
The accident occurred on January 15 at about 2:45 a.m. As per the police reports, the primary cause of death was the excessive speed of the car on a road that had a limit of 40mph on it.
It is also known that Willock wasn’t wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from the vehicle after the crash.
The vehicle driven by LeCroy struck a curb with its right front tire and left the road, hitting a pair of utility poles and cutting the vehicle in half, according to the crash report.
LeCroy was taken by EMS to a local hospital where she died. Willock, riding in the driver’s side passenger seat, died at the scene of his injuries.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart posted a tweet saying, “We are all heartbroken and devastated with the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy. Devin was an outstanding young man in every way. He was always smiling, was a great teammate, and was a joy to coach. Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day.”
Kirby also posted a photo of Devin with a heartfelt comment,” Miss you already. Thinking of you tonight, Devin.”
